Murder victim's family files lawsuit

(WBNG Binghamton) The family of a teenage girl who died at the hands of her boyfriend is seeking damages.

Shelby Jenkins was 16 when 20-year-old Steven Lipka strangled her.

She was living with Lipka and his grandparents on Westland Road in Vestal.

Jenkins' family claims Lipka's grandparents and a neighbor supplied him with alcohol the night of her death.

The lawsuit also claims Lipka had a history of becoming violent when consuming alcohol.

The lawsuit names Lipka's grandparents, Faye Lipka-Pellett and Michael Pellett, and neighbor Keith Cleveland. It calls their actions negligent, reckless and careless.

Lipka is serving an 18-year sentence for first-degree manslaughter.

The lawsuit does not ask for a specific amount for damages.
