Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Broome County Legislature welcomed three new members at their meeting Thursday night.
Two republicans were sworn in. Greg Baldwin of Endicott took the seat for District 6 and Jason Shaw of Endwell is representating District 8. Former legislator of 22 years, Democrat Mark Whalen was inducted as the District 15 representative.
"I'm looking forward to getting back into it and bringing a historical perspective on how things got to be the way they are," said Whalen (D). "Most of these programs have reasons for existing and those reasons still exist today."
Baldwin said now that his children are all grown up, he has the time to pursue his dream of serving on the legislature.
He says he wants to make the area an appealing place to live for young people.
"Most of the time people want their kids to stick around, and I do," said Baldwin (R). "If we create more opportunity, you know a better way here in Broome County, it benefits not only them but everyone else, so I'm very excited."
Shaw and his father own Our Country Hearts, a furniture store, gift shop and restaurant in Endicott.
"As somebody who deals with people every day who spend hard earned money, and money from their retirement savings, I just have to really protect them," said Shaw (R). "That's why I'm here."
