Vestal UPS store hit by data breach

Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The UPS Store has notified customers of a data breach that has affected 51 of its stores, including a location on the Vestal Parkway.

The company said a computer malware virus was found on the systems of some of its stores.

According to UPS Store public relations representative Chelsea Lee, customers who used a credit or debit card at the Vestal location between April 29 and August 11 could be impacted.

The potentially exposed information includes names, postal addresses, email addresses and payment card information.

As of August 11, the malware was eliminated and UPS said customers can shop securely at all the UPS Store locations.

“I understand this type of incident can be disruptive and cause frustration. I apologize for any anxiety this may have caused our customers.” said Tim Davis, President, The UPS Store Inc.

Lee said there are over 1,400 UPS Stores in the United States. The 51 that were impacted only make up 1 percent of the stores.

"One percent of our stores are individually owned and operated, and each system is individual which helped us in the fact that these, this breach, did not spread to other locations," Lee said.

UPS is providing an information website, identity protection and credit monitoring services to customers whose information may have been compromised.

“As soon as we became aware of the potential malware intrusion, we deployed extensive resources to quickly address and eliminate this issue. Our customers can be assured that we have identified and fully contained the incident,” Davis said.

The attorney general's office said it would be difficult to protect yourself from invasions at retailers and businesses, but there are ways to combat a potential invasion on personal and financial information when something like this happens.

"When your credit card statement comes in, when your bank statement comes in each month, look at it as soon as it comes in. That's the easiest way that you can pick up on this and the quickest way," said NYS Assistant Attorney General Michael Danaher.

Danaher added that customers will want to change passwords and potentially cancel cards.
