Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A jury finds Veronica Taft guilty of second degree murder for the death of her two-year-old son in Binghamton in 2010.

Jurors deliberated for several hours before handing down the verdict Tuesday.

For some who knew him, Tuesday represented justice for two-year-old Lyric Taft.

A celebration for Lyric began outside the Broome County Courthouse shortly after his mother Veronica Taft was found guilty of second degree murder.

"It's been terrible having to wait and see her be able to live her life when he couldn't, for her to take it away from him and still have hers wasn't fair but justice was served I feel and she will live in the hell he had to while he was alive," said Sarina Bigelow of Binghamton.

Sarina Bigelow and her family often babysat Lyric.

She testified that she saw Taft abuse him.

Lyric was found beaten to death in an apartment on Fayette Street in Binghamton back in December of 2010.

"Even in situations where we have very young victims or otherwise difficult circumstances, I think they can rest assured that the police agencies and District Attorney's office will work diligently and work together to try and accomplish a just result," said Senior Assistant District Attorney for Broome County, Peter DeLucia.

Taft was also found guilty of three charges of endangering the welfare of a child, for forcefully and continuously pushing Lyric off a couch, leaving him often in a locked, dark room, and holding his head into a pillow sometimes for a minute or more when he would cry.

"Lyric was a very sweet boy. When he was with my family he was always smiling, cheerful little boy running around playing," said Bruce Bigelow of Lisle.

"His smile, his laugh and his "I don't know" that was his number one phrase, I don't know just like that. I love him," said Sarina Bigelow.

Taft was upset and did cry after the verdict was read.

She faces up to 25 years to life in prison and will be sentenced in November.
