Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Hundreds of basketball players from all over Broome County and the country are in downtown Binghamton to raise awareness on the dangers of drunk driving.
Sixteen basketball teams from the east coast and mid west are playing in the 21st annual Mirabito STOP DWI Holiday Classic.
It took some serious work to get this years tournament put together. According to tournament coordinator, Christopher Marion, a couple teams dropped out a few weeks ago, and their spots needed to be filled quickly. Plus the storm on Wednesday put a damper on some travel plans.
Marion says that it's all worth the work, but he couldn't have done it without the volunteers. He said, "There's 65 people on our tournament organizing committee, we have a group of about 20 volunteers that are here about fourteen hours a day, making sure things run smoothly. So we really couldn't do it with out our volunteers."
Some volunteers have personal reasons why they wanted to spread the word of not drinking and driving. Like Afton sophomore, Emily Greenwood, she said, "(I know of) work friends, and families, have gotten into bad accidents and a couple of them haven't made it."
The tournament will run through out the weekend, with finals on Sunday night for both the regional and national teams.
