Syracuse, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Sen. Charles Schumer showed support for a new amendment that could put drone test sites in Syracuse.

The new amendment is for the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization bill.

Schumer, D-N.Y., wants Hancock Field in Syracuse to be one of the six test sites for the development of drones or unmanned aircraft, because of its attractive air space and concentration of related high-tech firms.

The democrat believes expanding drone testing in central New York could spark economic growth.

"The research development testing and manufacturing of these unmanned vehicles for civilian purposes will bring economic growth in the hundreds of millions and jobs in the thousands to Central New York should we win this competition," Schumer said.

Central New York currently has two restricted areas, four seasons, a varied terrain, an over water range and large airspace volume -- all things Schumer said are all key ingredients to being chosen as a test site.
