Binghamton, NY (WBNG BInghamton) A local World War II veteran recently honored in Italy for the 70th anniversary of the capture of Monte Cassino was honored at the Polish Community Center in Binghamton.

About 80 people attended a ceremony honoring Emilia Fudala.

Sunday afternoon, she received five proclamations for local and state governments.

Fudala said all of the attention she has received recently has been completely unexpected.

"My character is the moment when I do something for somebody it's done," said Fudala, "I am not waiting for any reward."

"It was kind of a surprise and honor to me really," she added.

Fudala spent six years in the Polish military during World War II. She transported food and supplies to soldiers on the front lines.

Since coming to America, she has been very active in the Polish community and volunteers for many local organizations.
