(WBNG Binghamton) To support the initiative to bring the Community Fireworks back to Ithaca, members of the Ithaca Professional Fire Fighters Association presented Mayor Svante Myrick with a check for $2,700.

According to a news release:

Ithaca firefighters collected donations from members, friends and family to contribute to the celebration.

Association President George Apgar stated, "Our members support various community activities and fundraising efforts throughout the year. Bringing the fireworks back to Ithaca was a natural fit. Our members are excited to support a community event that celebrates our nation's history."

Apgar added that each year thousands of people are injured from fireworks.

"Forty percent of the people injured with fireworks are children under 15. Supporting the community fireworks allows everyone to enjoy the Independence Day celebration in a safe (manner)."

The celebration will begin with a community picnic and music at Stewart Park at 6 p.m. Monday July 2. The fireworks will launch at 9:45 p.m. Ithaca Professional Firefighters Association members will be assisting with the collection of donations at Stewart Park the night of the fireworks.
