Ithaca, N.Y. (WBNG Binghamton) -- The Ithaca Police Department announced Tuesday that it will have extra traffic enforcement patrols throughout February looking for drivers in violation of New York's distracted driving laws.

Police will be conducting safety checkpoints and roving patrols throughout the city on different days and hours all month long.

Distracted Driving laws cover the use of a cell phone without a hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle. The newest distracted driving law also includes the use of a portable electronic device, which includes holding, viewing, transmitting or saving electronic data such as email, text messages or browsing the web.

Drivers ticketed for such offenses face a fine of up to $150 and three points in their license.
