(WBNG Binghamton) The family and friends of the late Broome County Executive Donald L. McManus plan to host a blood drive in his honor on Friday, May 17, 2013 from 1PM-6PM at Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Endicott.

According to a news release:

Event Coordinator Grandson D.J. McManus said: “On behalf of all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, we are trying to continue The Legacy of Donald McManus and his commitment to giving back to the community that gave him so much in return”.

Don McManus, who passed away in November, stayed involved in multiple community activities; despite his advancing illness which required more than 40 blood transfusions. Due to the efforts and kindness of many Southern Tier blood donors, McManus was able to live his last month’s enjoying his family and friends and remained dedicated to the community who gave him life. His life was and is an inspiration to all.

In 1976, McManus became Broome County’s first ever Democrat elected as County Executive.
