(WBNG Binghamton) Due to the recent tragedy with the loss of Captain Matt Porcari, the Owego Fire Department is sponsoring its inaugural “Fallen Firefighters Memorial Golf Tournament” on June 8th, 2013 at the Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin.
According to a news release:
The monies raised from the tournament will support two important causes that include scholarships for graduating Owego Free Academy seniors pursing further education in a first responder field and building/operating costs for the OFD Training Facility. The tournament is being held in honor of Owego Fallen Firefighters Matt Porcari (LODD 2013), Steve Gavin (LODD 2003), Richard Beck (LODD 1993), Winfield Knapp (1965) and Roy Wiltse (LODD 1930s).
OFD has been in the process of building a state-of-the-art emergency services training center since 2000 to benefit the first responders in the Southern Tier to include Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement agencies. One of the main components of the facility will be a live-burn building designed to make training as realistic as possible.
Equally important will be scholarships provided to area youth furthering their education in a first responder field. Such a worthy endeavor and commitment to serving others is something the department hopes to promote through these scholarships.
Sponsorship and team registration information is available by contacting John Loftus at 607-759-9420 or firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline is May 4th.
