(WBNG Binghamton) The Owego Hose Team won the Central New York Firemen’s Association Overall Points trophy on Saturday, July 20th at the association’s annual convention in Hamilton, NY.

According to a news release:

The Croton Hose #3A “Flat Rats” team bested the Croton Hose #3B team by two points.  Six teams from Central New York fire departments including two Owego teams and the Apalachin “Hose Twisters” competed for prize monies, trophies, and bragging rights at the firematic events.

The defending Central New York Champion Company #3B team was in the lead heading into the final race of the day.  However, the Company #3A team ran a near perfect straight lay race and 18 year hose racing veteran Pat Gavin cross threated on the Company #3B team’s run allowing the #3A team to win the title.  The Company #3A team won the title with 13 points with Company #3B placing second overall with 11 points.  Gavin jumped into a nearby lake as Matt Porcari did in 2009 after a similar mishap in the same race.  The Owego #3B team won the Larry Lanning Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

The races are timed events where firefighters test their skills. Teams of five members must connect nozzles to hoses, hoses to hoses, and hoses to the fire hydrant, and knock down targets in the quickest time in the ladder, wye, and straight lay competitions. Hose races improve basic firefighting skills.
Area fire departments from 20 counties that comprise the association were invited to the races.  Teams from Apalachin, Cedarville, Clayville, Owego, and Whitesboro competed.

Company #3A Team Members included Jimmy Morris, Joe Ward, Mike MacNaughton, Tom Donovan III, and Nick Jerzak.

The Owego Hose Teams dedicated their wins to Fallen Owego Firefighter Matt Porcari and Past Owego Fire Chief Ed Franz.  Porcari raced on the 1995 championship team and Franz on the 1959 championship team.  Franz served his second stint as Owego Fire Chief the past two years before retiring.
