'Pearls of Wisdom' for Breast Health Campaign Begins in October

(WBNG Binghamton) October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it also marks the eighth year of the “Pearls of Wisdom” program sponsored by the UHS Breast Center and supported by Comfort & Son Jewelers.

According to a news release:

The campaign was the idea of Christina Boyd of United Health Services with help from Adam Comfort, owner of Comfort & Son Jewelers in Vestal. It began in 2004, at UHS Binghamton General Hospital and UHS Wilson Medical Center, as a program to encourage women to have a yearly mammogram.

After the first exam at UHS, the patient is given a certificate inviting them to visit Comfort & Son Jewelers, and redeem it for a silver chain and beautiful freshwater pearl. At each annual mammogram thereafter, they receive a certificate for another pearl so they can watch their necklace ‘grow’.

Since its inception, UHS has seen the number of breast health patients increase, with a 25% increase in the number of women scheduling a mammogram annually, as recommended by the American Cancer Society and many health professionals.

According to Adam Comfort, “We are pleased to participate with UHS in this worthwhile project, and are proud of the positive results that have been achieved.”
