The Walk/Run for Wishes features a 5K competitive run and a 5K non-competitive walk with refreshments and fun for the whole family.

This annual event invites community members to help make wishes come true for children in Broome, Chenango, Otsego and Tioga counties.

Day-of registration for the Walk/Run for Wishes begins at 8 a.m. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a special presentation from a wish child and family.

Walkers can also register in advance by visiting http://www.maw.kintera.org/binghamtonrunforwishes2011.

Prizes will be awarded for competitive runners, as well as for top individual and top team walkers’ fund-raising efforts.

Since 1985, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York has granted more than 235 wishes in the Southern Tier – that’s approximately ten wishes per year for children in the region.

“Last year alone, we were honored to help make some very special dreams come true for seven children in the Southern Tier, including trips to Walt Disney World, the All Star Game, a shopping spree, meeting Dwayne Wade and the Wizards of Waverly Place”, says Make-A-Wish Chapter President and CEO, Diane Kuppermann.

The total cost of wishes granted in the region in 2010 exceeded $73,000.

The average cost of a wish is nearing $9,000, Make-A-Wish Foundation is looking to events like the Southern Tier Walk/Run for Wishes to provide community members with an opportunity to rally together and support wish-granting in their own backyards.

The Southern Tier Walk/Run for Wishes enjoys the generous sponsorship support of BAE Systems, Lexis Nexis and Your News Now.
