(WBNG Binghamton) With its newest expansion, Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics in Vestal has created the only skin pathology laboratory of its kind in a 100-mile radius.
According to a news release:
This new lab, being fully built out currently in the dermatology practice’s new $1.5 million facility in Endwell, will allow the practice to offer better service to its customers and allow for more prompt diagnoses for patients.
“This new lab represents a significant investment in our practice, and further demonstrates our commitment to our patients and to the community,” says Colleen Crandell, D.O., F.A.A.D., co-owner of Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics with Curt Fenkl, D.O.
The state-of-the-art lab is located in the dermatologists’ newly constructed facility on Hooper Road in Endwell; a grand opening and ribbon cutting is planned for September however the new office itself will open August 6th. The pathology lab, which represents an investment of nearly $200,000 in equipment, will enable the practice to provide in-house analysis of samples and specimens rather than sending out to the nearest lab, which is more than 50 miles away. Technicians hired by Southern Tier will have access to hospital-quality microscopes and equipment, including an Avantik RVG-1 Tissue Processor, a closed system tissue processor which can process up to 300 biopsies per day.
Having their own lab means the doctors will have access to results from tests and analysis rapidly, instead of having to wait several additional days – or more – for results.
“This will allow us to make diagnoses quicker and improve patient care with more timely treatment of all pathologic skin conditions,” says Dr. Fenkl.
When fully operational, Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics will employ two to three full-time technicians in the lab. It is expected the lab will process more than 9,000 biopsy specimens and produce approximately 12,000 slides and stains in the first year.
The new lab is part of Southern Tier Dermatology & Aesthetics’ $1.5 million investment in the acquisition, renovation and equipping of the new three-story facility in Endwell. The laboratory will be located on the ground floor. Also on the ground floor, patients will find a separate aesthetic entrance and treatment area. This “medi-spa” is a combination of a medical office and day spa, where customers can receive laser treatments, chemical peels, injectables, among other aesthetic procedures, all while under a doctor’s supervision. A full line of high-quality skin care products is also available.
