Final Johnson City Dissolution Forum

By WBNG News

A final forum on dissolution was held tonight in Johnson City.

Before voters head to the polls next week.

But as Action News Reporter Leigh Dana tells us...

While taxpayers were looking to get some last minute questions answered, some left still scratching their heads.

Not as many people turned out to Thursday night's final forum on Johnson City dissolution as previous discussions have boosted...

Even though local leaders leading the discussion ranged from Former Dissolution Committee Chairman Bill Klish to Broome County Sheriff David Harder.

However, the 100 that were at Johnson City's Senior Center came out with lists of concerns for the panel that, they say, have not been answered over the past few months.

"I'd like to know the future of the community, downtown. Because I have a store down there," says Robert Balanda of Johnson City.

"Other than hearing issues about department of public works and public safety, I haven't really heard that much else about what is going to happen if the village does dissolve?" says Kathy Schyndler of Johnson City.

But many audience members in attendance say some questions weren't answered and just were being side-stepped.

"They attempted to them, but they didn't answer them with any sort of certainty or anything that would be comfortable with them saying "yes," says Steve Cwikla of Johnson City.

One of the biggest issues addressed was the village's debt.

Taxpayers begged to find out how much they'll have to shell out pay it off..

"And that in combination with the forfeiture of millions worth of village assets just doesn't seem fundamentally fair," says Cwikla.

One thing some taxpayers say is fair...

Think wisely before voting because once a decision is made, there's no turning back.
