The first stop ‘On the Road’ in Tioga County is off the beaten path in Candor, NY where they are preparing for a Zombie Apocolypse.  Turkey Trot Acres has earned a national reputation as America’s Premier Wild Turkey Hunting Destination but more recently it is hosting it’s first ever Zombie Fest on June 22 from 3-8pm.

“We’re going to have a zombie hunt, these woods like I said are infested with these creatures, and we have a 400 yard walk through the woods, similar to a 3D archery thing and every 60 to 100 yards you’re going to find a mess of these things and your goal with your trusty paintball marker is to dispatch them with a paintball to the head,” said Pete Clare, Owner of Turkey Trot Acres.

The Zombie hunt is for ages 12 and up, but everyone can enjoy the zom-b-que with their famous hickory smoked bar-b-que and live music from the band The Guilty.  The fun starts at 3pm and a portion of the proceeds go to benefit the Candor Farmer’s Market. The Zom-B-Que and Band Cover charge is $25 and Zom-B-Que, Zombie Hunt and Band cost $45.  www.turkeytrotacres.com

Another great place to visit in Tioga County is Applegate Orchards for you pick apples and raspberries.

“We are strictly a you-pick orchard, families, school groups and churches can come up and pick,” said Ray Reeves, owner of Applegate Orchards. “We have six different varieties; Gala, Honey Crisp, Crimson Crisp, Ginger Gold, MacIntosh, Red Delicious.”

Reeves says it will be a great season for apples and some varieties will be ready to pick in August. applegateorchardsny.webs.com/

Owego is one of 1,500 Preserve America Communities in the country. From the historic homes, restored county buildings and quaint store fronts it’s easy to see why Owego was named Coolest Small Town in America in 2009.

The shopping in Owego is unparalleled, whether it’s jewelry, crafts or antiques, there’s something for everyone all within walking distance. At the black cat gallery on Front Street you can find charming gifts and artwork.

“We work with a lot of local artists to showcase their work,” Janelle Malia owner of the Black Cat Gallery said. “We have a lot of people who come in to the store looking for something unique and we have a wide variety of photography and metal work, lots of jewelry paintings and pottery.

And if you like antiquing you’re going to want to stop in to the Early Owego Antique Center located in the heart of the Historic Owego Marketplace in the old Newberry’s store.

“We’re a multi-dealer shop, so we have a lot of genres,” Jim Mead, owner of Early Owego Antique Center said. “We have a general line of antiques, but we also have some specialty things like estate jewelry, military items, glass ware and china we have tools, old books, furniture, but also some specialty things that I think people would be surprised to find.”

The store is open 6 days a week year round and in addition to offering antiques they also host lectures series and musical performances for the Owego Art walk which takes place the third Friday each month.

Coming up on June 14 and 15th is the 33rd Annual Strawberry Festival and you guessed it, you’re going to find great desserts like the famous strawberry shortcake made at the Hand of Man, but even if you don’t like strawberries there’s fun and entertainment for the entire family. This year’s theme is about honoring emergency volunteers including fallen firefighter Captain Matthew Porcari.

“This is our big kick off to the summer in all of Tioga County,” said Co-Chair of the Strawberry Festival Lisa Curatolo. “On almost every corner you will have different music being played and of course at 10am which everyone loves a parade and everyone loves the Strawberry Festival Parade.  We have a lot of activities throughout the day of course. One of the fun things on Friday evening is our block party that is the kick off to the entire weekend and it’s just an incredible time an incredible celebration. Old fashioned fun good for the entire family.”

If you’re going out to the festival this weekend shuttle buses run continuously on Saturday from Tops parking lot, Hickories park and Tioga County Fairgrounds. For a whole list of events click here www.owegostrawberryfestival.com/
