Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The BHS Steel Drum Band is gearing up for a big performance. It will be performing in concert with the legendary Harry Belafonte this weekend in Ohio.
The Steel Drum Band will perform with Belafonte at the Akron Civic Center on Saturday, November 17.
The concert will also feature steel drum master Tracey Thornton and Street Corner Symphony, from the TV show "The Sing Off."
The Binghamton High School Steel Drum Band is directed by Director of Bands, Joel Smales.
"We're very excited. It's going to be a 2,500 seat theater. There's going to be a concert Friday evening as kind of a warm up with a group called Street Corner Symphony then on Saturday, Harry Belafonte will be there," said Smales, "We are one of only a few schools invited."'
The Steel Drum Band was founded in 1999 and has performed throughout the country for Music Festivals and Conventions in Nashville, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Virginia, throughout much of New York.
The group has released 3 CD’s to date.
The band has performed with area orchestras and famous music luminaries from around the world.
