Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) More than 500 Theodore Roosevelt Elementary students moved and grooved at the sixth annual Diabetes Day – JDRF Walk/Dance-a-Thon on Friday.
The theme song for Diabetes Day was “Move It, Move It” from the movie Madagascar.
Katie Hecox, a nurse at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary, organized the event.
"That's our big goal, to try to help prevent [diabetes] and help our kids see that exercise is a healthy way to get out there and exercise and do all this dancing," Hecox said.
Hecox said there are 1,500 children diagnosed with diabetes every day and she hoped this event showed kids and their families that it's fun to be active and eat well.
Teachers even got in on the fun and dressed up as characters from the movie.
Students received packets about diabetes, healthy eating and exercise.
She said students have been learning about juvenile diabetes and raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF, for the past few weeks.
Last year, the elementary school kids raised $1,700.
