Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Firefighters here were busy early Wednesday evening, although it had little to do with the massive snow storm that's parked over the region.

The first fire was reported just before 3:45 p.m. at River's Edge Apartment complex on Oak St. Crews were called there after smoke was seen pouring from the two-story building. The dryer in the house caught on fire, but it was quickly extinguished. There is damage to the laundry room of the apartment. It is not yet know what caused the dryer to catch on fire.

A mother and son were home when the fire started, but they made it out safely, according to Binghamton Assistant Fire Chief Steve Faughnan.

A second fire broke out less than an hour later at 9 Fairview Ave. Crews were called there for flames shooting through the roof from the second floor of the home.

Crews had the fire under control in less than 20 minutes, according to Binghamton Fire Chief Daniel Thomas. Five people were home during the fire but no one was injured. The fire started on the second floor of the home, the cause is still under investigation.

There is significant damage to the second floor of the home and to the attic.
