Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A former New York Giants player stopped in Owego to talk to students about making smart decisions.
On Friday morning, Keith Elias visited Owego Middle School.
Elias played professional football for the Giants and the Indianapolis Colts in the 1990's. Before that, he played football at Princeton University.
He signed with the Giants as a free agent in 1994 and played on both special teams and in the backfield.
Elias played for the Colts in 1998 and 1999 and lead the team in kickoff returns in the 1998 season.
He's now an inspirational speaker and works with Heroes and Cool Kids, a mentoring program for children.
"I think that the New York Giants gives you 30 seconds and then the kids, they are real. They are asking, 'What do you have for me?,'" he said. "I appreciate the platform the New York Giants has given me. Hopefully, I can give (the students) something real that they can grab onto and that's really what it's about."
Elias spoke to high school students about how the choices they make today impact their future.
"How those choices create habits and habits become who we are. I want to talk about character and (kids) being the voice in their generation and not the echo," he said.
Elias speaks weekly at schools, churches and leadership seminars.
Owego's athletic director met Elias at a football camp in Connecticut and asked him to come speak to the schools.
Elias is also a writer with two fantasy novels and a nonfiction book. He lives with his wife in Toms River, N.J.
