Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) It's been a Binghamton landmark for almost 100 years, but within 6 months, the Crowley plant on the city's south side will stop producing milk.

HP Hood says it will close the plant and warehouse by April.

More than 50 employees will be out of work.

Broome County got the phone call Tuesday morning.

The company says other Hood facilities in the northeast -- such as locations in New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts -- are better equipped to supply the volume of what's currently being produced in Binghamton.

However, the Conklin Avenue site will still remain a distribution center.
Hood will also keep the office on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The closing affects 54 employees, who were notified Tuesday.
Hood will offer severance packages to those employees, and will offer outplacement through an external provider.

HP Hood will keep 80 jobs in Broome County.

They'll work in distribution, transportation, sales and in administration.

HP Hood operates Crowley Foods, in business in Binghamton since 1915.

Products with a Crowley, Hood, or private label are produced there - including milk, cream, and orange juice products.
