Local students develop, share their own business plans

Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) New business ideas are generated from high school students.

The 2013 Greater Binghamton Scholastic Challenge was held at Binghamton University Tuesday.

This is the third year of the competition.

Students from 11 local high schools competed in 35 teams.

They've worked since November, developing their own business ideas, writing business plans and now presenting their concepts.

Some of the business ideas included cupcake company and a mobile café.

Johnson City High School student Erin Whitney shared her team's idea.

"Our business plan is an app you can download and it allows you to shop online and it also suggests clothes you may like based on previous decisions," said Whitney.

The GBSC is sponsored by Modern Marketing Concepts in Binghamton, Binghamton University, Broome-Tioga BOCES and other local businesses.

"The idea is to build an entrepreneurial competition versus the schools who are used to competing on the athletic fields and different endeavors," said Dan Babcock, the CEO of Modern Marketing Concepts.

"This is a program, we want to teach and change the world one idea at a time through entrepreneurial and leadership," he said.
