Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) From sprints to shot put, there was a lot of hustling at the Chenango Valley High School track and field Saturday.
Fourteen different teams participated in this year's regional Spring Special Olympic games.
Athletes of all ages spent months looking forward to the big day.
This year's youngest competitor had extra reason to celebrate -- the games landed on his 7th birthday.
"It's fun," Samuel Carter said.
Sam's nerves kicked in right before this race, but when the gun went off, he didn't hesitate.
"We applaud them for trying as hard as they do," longtime organizer John Crosby said.
Crosby has been organizing the games since the 1980s.
"My favorite part about today is when it starts and everybody is here," Crosby said.
The opening ceremony involved the teams walking around the course, the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, and a running of the torch.
WBNG's Howard Manges and Dave Greber led the running of the torch as Travis Eldridge MC'd the event.
