Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Binghamton High School Steel Drum Band brings the spirit of the islands to the Terra Cotta Room, performing for the Binghamton Rotary to help it get in a carefree mood for the holiday season.
The band started 11 years ago, and its popularity has grown tremendously.
It's already recorded 3 CDS.
"We started with just a couple of old instruments from the 1940s, probably had oil in them at some point," said director Joel Smales. "It kind of skyrocketed from there, and the school district got behind us; put a real positive force in the school, and in the students."
The band also recently played for the Broome-Tioga Guidance Counselor's Association.
Next up? It hopes to wow audiences on New Year's Eve.
Smales says he hopes it can record a fourth CD before the current students graduate.
