Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Students joined Mayor Rich David to officially open Recreation Park's carousel for the season.

The students from Horace Mann and MacArthur Elementary School took the first official carousel ride of the season Thursday morning.

The last ceremonial "first carousel ride" was in 2005 during former Mayor Richard Bucci's final year in office.

"Unfortunately, students were deprived of this opportunity to take a ceremonial ride and officially open the Recreation Park carousel for the summer," said Mayor David. "I'm pleased to bring back this very important tradition."

The carousel received upgrades in the off-season, including paint for its wooden deck, polished and cleaned horses and a new central drive system.

The city's two carousels, Rec Park and Ross Park, will be open until Labor Day.

The Rec Park carousel operates on the following days:
- Monday to Friday, 3:00 p.m to 7:45 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

Starting June 21, Rec Park's carousel is open daily, 12 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

The Ross Park carousel is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and until 7:45 p.m. on Thursdays.
