We have been receiving a lot of great cloud photos from a severe thunderstorm as it moved through Tioga County, NY. Thank you to everyone who submitted pictures to us!
Most of the clouds in this gallery are called shelf clouds. This type of cloud is found on the leading edge of some thunderstorms.
They form when cold air from a thunderstorm downdraft rushes out ahead of the storm. This pushes the warmer air up into the storm. As the warmer air is forced to rise above the cooler air, it cools to the point where the moisture condenses into the cloud that you see.
