Fresh food face-off highlights local products, chefs

Dickinson, NY (Binghamton WBNG) Local chefs in the Southern Tier cooked up their best dishes for the 5th annual Fresh Food Face-off, all to win the title for the best taste of Broome while using locally grown ingredients.

Local chefs and restaurants, local breweries, wineries, cheeses and even local hot sauce were
featured at this year's Fresh Food Face-Off

"We take a ton of pride in it, we are home grown guys. We just want to make sure that the community knows we are here and obviously this a great place to show our hot sauce” said Justin Parker, co-owner of Burnin’ Mojo Hot Sauce.

Local products and services are important to any economy, say local agricultural officials. Agriculture in Broome county is a nearly a $31 million industry, and with 563 farms across the area, it sends the message that agriculture is important

"Agriculture is here and here to stay and it is such an important part of our economy. The more agriculture we can have the more people we can bring in and buy local products. For about every $15 we spend weekly on local products, it brings about $800 back into the local economy on a yearly basis” said Brian Aukema of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Venders at this year's face-off included The Beef, The Kitchen Store, The Loft @ 99, Sodexo, Water Street Brewing Company and River Bistro.

Face-off veteran Al Vos says this year is the best of which he's been a part.

"Oh it is no comparison," Vos said. "The number of booths and vendors, the variety of food and the investment of the community. The restaurants are out here strutting their stuff."

The winner of this year’s award from the “Best Taste of Broome” was Sodexo with their dish of grilled chicken and corn chowder with carved smoked flank steak over jalapeño mashed with “BU greens."
