New Life To The Kilmer Building

New Life To The Kilmer Building

By Jared Kaplan

A piece of Binghamton history could see new life.

The Kilmer Building has been vacant for about two decades.

But it's slowly being renovated.

And, businesses are moving in.

This 6 story building was built in 1903 to make Swamp Root, an old fashioned medicine.

It was also home to Landers Cosmetics.

But for the last 20 years it's sat vacant.

Until now.

After undergoing a few years of renovations, The Goldsmith jewelry store is ready to call it home.

"My husband was on his lunch break walking around town looking for an appropriate spot and one day poked his head in here and saw this magnificent building," says Gina McHugh of The Goldsmith.

By early December the Kilmer Brasserie will move in too.

The restaurant plans to serve French cuisine.

"This building is absolutely beautiful and when I saw the space I thought it would be a perfect brossaire like you can find in France," says its owner Jean Baptiste Mavian.

Frank Whitney owns the building with his wife, Lynn.

He says restoring parts of the original building has been a primary goal of renovations.

Like these pillars in the Kilmer Brasserie.

And this painting in The Goldsmith.

Even part of the tile floor will be brought back to life.

"Ryan Davis he's been in here for going on 3 years restoring all of this intriguing artwork." says Whitney.

"I think it's great, it exceeded our expectations."

Much of this building's 72-thousand square feet will also be devoted to higher end office space.

With the first tenants slated to move in later this year.
