Onondaga Indian Nation Land Claim To Be Argued In Court

By WBNG News

An American Indian tribe is claiming a large chunk of Upstate New York's land, including Binghamton.
The Onondaga Indian Nation will be arguing in Albany today that New York state illegally took
some 4 thousand square miles of land from the tribe two centuries ago.
The land in the legal dispute runs from the Saint Lawrence River to the Pennsylvania border.
Including the cities of Binghamton, Oswego, Syracuse and Watertown.

The tribe's attorney says they aren't seeking money and don't want to evict the 875 thousand residents of the disputed area.
The tribe wants to see Onondaga Lake and other hazardous waste sites in central New York cleaned up.
The tribe filed its land claim two years ago.
New York state says the Iroquois tribe waited too long to sue.
