Life After Johnny

Life After Johnny

By Gabe Osterhout

7 months ago cartoonist Johnny Hart passed away at his home in Nineveh.

For his family, its been a difficult time of grieving and transition.

Hart's B.C. comic strip is now in their hands.

Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout spent time with the family and brings us their story of Life After Johnny.

Johnny Hart's absence is felt at his studio in Nineveh.

But it's not a room filled with only sadness.

The Hart family is together here, using humor to ease the pain.

"It hasn't been that hard for me because I've had my family with me," says Hart's wife, Bobby.

While grieving the loss of a husband, father, and grandfather, the family decide the future of Hart's comic strip creations, B.C. and the Wizard of Id.

"Nobody ever asked dad point blank but I think he would have wanted them both to keep going, as long as it was the right thing for us to be doing," says Hart's daughter, Patty Hart-Pomeroy.

After Johnny Hart passed away, his family took over the comic strip.

And as they say here at Johnny Hart's studio, they stand behind their strip.

Johnny's grandson Mason moved home from Minnesota to become the cartoonist for BC.

He works from Johnny's desk.

"I'm not sure if grieving the loss of my grandfather has been a big part of this yet. It's almost as if I'm putting that off until I know the things we need to do to keep our comic strip going are settled," says grandson Mason Mastroianni.

Daughter Perri sits in Johnny's old chair.

She's the only one who worked on BC with Johnny, and continues to fill in the lettering.

"It's been hard just jumping into this. It's also been good the whole family is doing it but I'm still not quite used to it, coming up here and having my dad not here," says Perri Hart.

As life goes on after Johnny, the family can smile knowing they're continuing his creations.

Tuesday on Action News at 6, we'll hear from the Hart family on their approach to continuing the comic strips and some of changes they've made.
