Moving From Chalk Board To Smart Board

By Jessica Light

Schools around the area are moving away from the chalk board.

A new piece of technology is changing the way teachers and kids interact in the classroom.

Apalachin Elementary School is using the "Smart" Board.

Classroom technology is getting Smarter.

Mr. Keith Newman uses this Smart Board to teach his 5th graders at Apalachin Elementary.

It's hooked up to his laptop.

So everything you see here...is projected here.

"Let's say we're working with British Columbia.." says Newman.

He can drag over an image, make it larger, pick up a special pen...and even write on the board.

"And i didn't like the way I wrote on it, so be it. Boom its gone," says Newman.

Newman says this interactive learning tool means moving away from the pen and paper.

Even the chalk board isn't getting as much use.

And the kids are excited about this new technology.

They've even taught their teacher a thing or two.

"They'll say why don't you try that button over there and see how that works. Ok I'll give it a shot and boom, something works," says Newman.

"You write with it like its a normal pen or paper, like a board but its motion sensitive. Its Cool," says Anya Vining.

"Its more fun of teaching then just looking at the chalk board. I just think it's easier to learn," says Lily Coleman.

Right now this is the only Smart board in the entire Apalachin Elementary school, but in the next few years, this technology may be a staple in every classroom.

There's already a laptop and projector in each room.

All they would need is the smart board itself.

"We're like bragging to all our friends. We get like the best thing ever. Just our class. No one else," says Jack Bell.

Just this class for now, but not for long.

Apalachin Elementary School Principal Joe DiCosimo says he hopes to have at least one smart board in each grade level within the next year.

But that depends on funding.

Each smart board has a price tag of 800 to 1 thousand dollars.
