Take The Train To NYC?

By Erik Burling

You can not get there by plane or train.

The automobile is the only way to get to New York City.

Senator Charles Schumer is pushing to connect Greater Binghamton and the Big Apple by commuter train.

These travelers are waiting to board a bus in Binghamton bound for New York City.

But many say they would just as easily take a train.

"I think it would be great if we had a passenger train that went to New York. I love to take the train," says Joe Zell of Binghamton.

"I think it's an excellent idea. Go for it," says Susan Jackson of Bath.

Senator Schumer is pushing the state and Amtrak to go for it.

He wants the DOT and Amtrak to work on a study to find out what's needed to link passenger trains from Binghamton to New York City.

Studies have been done before.

"The conclusion was that the most feasible route would be through Scranton based on the completion, yet to happen of restoring a piece of missing rail between Scranton and New York City," says Steven Gayle of the Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study.

State Senator Thomas Libous backed that study in 2002.

Libous says the region's economy is handcuffed by the lack of passenger trains.

"Many businesses have to go to New York City on a regular basis. I know employees like Lockheed or Security Mutual or other companies," says Libous.

Libous hopes to work with Schumer on the renewed effort to lay the track for passenger trains in Binghamton.

"It seems more comfortable on a train. You can move around. On a bus your stuck. You get a little seat, and you're stuck in that little seat," says Libous.

Schumer and Libous hope to bring the comfort of traveling by train to the Southern Tier.

Schumer says the state already has the money to fund the study.

He also says there's already a separate effort to restore the missing track link between Lackawanna Pennsylvania, and Hoboken New Jersey.

That would make the Binghamton connection to New York City possible.
