Medical Malpractice Claim Settled

By WBNG News

A malpractice claim relating to death of a Southern Tier teen is settled.
17 year old Emily Shank of Trumansburg died here at Wilson Regional Medical Center following surgery back in December 2004. Shank underwent surgery to upgrade a device implanted in her brain when she was an infant to prevent fluid from building up.
The lawsuit claimed she died after surgery because nurses in the pediatric unit failed to monitor her vital signs.
A state health department investigation came
to the same conclusion, but didn't determine whether it played a role in her death.
United Health Services, which operates the hospital, settled with Shank's family.
The terms of the settlement are sealed and the agreement prevents family members from discussing the case.
