Greek Peak Marks 50 Years in Business

By WBNG News

Fifty years ago Greek Peak opened its doors to families of Upstate New York...

And this weekend the mountain is celebrating a half century of family fun.

Action News Reporter Julianne Sweeney went there to show us how the resort is toasting its golden anniversary.

Greek Peak Mountain Resort in the Town of Virgil has hit a major milestone...its 50th anniversary.

To celebrate...it has invited back its longtime skiiers...both the young and old.

"This place has touched a lot of people over the past fifty years, and some of them are still coming out," said Kevin Morrin of Greek Peak.

People who were there to see Greek Peak get off the ground...are still skiing at the mountain.

"I remember falling down a lot when I first started out, and they didn't have these brand new fancy skis," said Stephen Griffin of Ithaca.

"It's a great sport. I think you can do it at all ages. Ya know...I don't know why the older people quit," said Bob Halstead of Owego.

The Estep sisters learned how to ski at Greek Peak.

They say lessons with staff here gave them the confidence to branch out on their own.

"You can go down fast, and you can go through the woods and like over jumps and stuff," said Katherine Estep.

"I also like going down real fast in the Green Hills," said sister Elizabeth.

Many parents credit Greek Peak with being a family-friendly resort.

"You feel very safe with your kids here 'cuz they'll always see someone they know," Elysia Godas of Binghamton said.

On top of celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, Greek Peak has even more reason to celebrate.

"Skiing conditions are the best all year...I mean you couldn't ask for any better," Morrin said.

Great snow-making weather...

Mother Nature chipping in with some natural snow...

And warmer temperatures attracting skiers...

"Everything is lining up perfectly for the mountain this season"

And the mountain hopes things continue to line up perfectly in the next fifty years...

"I'll keep coming back until I can't get the skis on."

And it shouldn't have a problem...

With loyal customers like this.

Greek Peak continues its celebration tomorrow with a barbecue birthday bash.

And as part of its anniversary, anyone celebrating a 50th birthday, whether it was last year or this year, gets a free lift ticket.
