War Protest Takes Violent Turn

War Protest Takes Violent Turn

By Erik Burling

On the eve of the 5 year anniversary of the US invasion on Iraq, a peaceful protest turns violent.

The planned protest of about 150 people started on the campus of Binghamton University.

But when some of those protestors took to the streets chaos shortly followed.

"I am appalled, appalled that the message we were here to convey of non-violence was answered by the police who were beating and pepper spraying people," says BU student Ben Elliot.

"At first we gave them the one lane which was a driving lane and they were walking peacefully. Then they went over to the passing lane and blocked the complete roadway," says Lt. Jerry Mullins of Vestal Police.

Causing chaos.

Causing car accidents.

Causing a stand-off between protestors and police.

"They put it all out of control the police did. I got sprayed I was standing there holding my sign up in peace," says a student.

"They were protesting non violently, why did it turn Violent?" asks reporter.

"When we got out of the car and tried to move them out of the roadway they struck a few of the officers."

According to police it wasn't just an interview protestors interrupted.

"I don't think it's doing any good for the protestors to do this because the war is going to go on. I don't agree with the war, but it is going to go on. And for what they're doing I think it's causing a lot of chaos for travelers on the parkway," says Mary Seraydarian of Binghamton.

It took nearly a dozen police cars, and nearly 3 dozen officers to end the stand-off.

Sending students back to campus, restoring order on the parkway.
