Red Cross Steps In to House Victims

By WBNG News

The American Red Cross is stepping in to make sure these families have a place to live.

The organization is finding shelter for 10 people: 9 in the apartment building and one person from a damaged home next door.

The Red Cross says this is the 45th fire its responded to this year.

"They just have lost everything and so we're providing shelters to them at this point in the form of hotel rooms, clothing food and talking to them about what other medical needs they may have," said Cindy Gordineer with the American Red Cross of the Southern Tier.

Two Binghamton officers suffered minor injuries.

Vito Vincelli suffered smoke inhalation and Dave Baer broke his foot.

Two fire fighters were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

It was Officer Connor Heslin who first noticed the fire around 3:30 this morning.

We'll hear from him tonight at 11:00.
