Broome-Tioga BOCES' Role in Consolidation Study

By Jessica Light

On the issue of school consolidation, the report used the Broome-Tioga BOCES district as an example
It recommends BOCES take over services like transportation maintenance and special education administration.
The report estimates a savings of 12 to 16 million dollars a year.
But the superintendent believes the commission used a Broome-Tioga BOCES consolidation study from 2004.
He points to potential problems, like changing special education services.
Busch says "If you did what that reports telling you to do it would cost you more money because you'd be getting sued every time you turn around. So a lot of what was in that report we've done in-depth studies on."
Busch says many of the suggestions are not feasible under current state law.
But others have been implemented, like expanding the central business office to manage many of BOCES 15 school district's.
