MLK Statue And Learning Center

Part of the River Walk in Downtown Binghamton will have a new look.

Work will soon begin on a new community area, and a learning center without walls.

As Action News reporter tells us, it's all focused around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The River Trail offers enjoyment of the outdoors and a place to exercise.

Reverend Arthur Jones Jr. and his wife Camille hope to enhance it with education.

They're working with the Dr. Martin Luther King Commission to add a community area, learning center and statue.

"We're going to have a 7 and a half foot life sized statue of Dr. Martin Luther King right there on Court Street, right at the Court Street bridge where children can walk up and look," say Revrend Jones.

Camille Jones is designing a learning center without walls.

These posts will serve as 20 different stations.

Each with a plaque about activists like Jesse Jackson, Susan B. Anthony and Binghamton native William Moore.

"Each station, you can come and read about different activists that have helped change America and hoping to encourage some young person, or not so young person to better their community," say Jones.

There are also plans to design a stage and meeting area for community events.

"There's a plan on the boards to develop a larger plaza, really a nice gathering space downtown. We can get small groups, 50, 20 people upwards of 3 to 5 thousand people could gather for different events," says Michael Haas, of the River Trails Commission

Most of the planning is complete.

Work has started and will continue throughout the summer.

Jones hopes to have the project complete by Spring 2009.

The project will cost nearly 75 thousand dollars.

The MLK Commission has looked to various organizations, businesses and some state grants to raise money.
