Healthy Spending At Farmers Markets

The price of food continues to rise.

Today an alternative option opened.

The Otsiningo Park Farmers Market in the Town of Dickinson.

People came for the fresh food, but it's their spending that's healthy for the local economy.

The big draw at the Ostiningo Farmers Market is freshness...

People who buy food here, say they like knowing where it comes from.

And knowing that it's grown locally.

"It's not trucked in from anywhere. And you know it's grown a few days from being harvested. It's in your hand, ready to eat," says Jason Rayno of Port Crane.

"Grapes from Chile, they're gorgeous. But how far have they travelled to get here?" added Patty Albaugh from Binghamton.

"Some farmers here say rising food and fuel costs are making it difficult to keep their costs down."

McRey Farms in Glen Aubrey says the necessities to raise livestock like soybeans, corn and feed grain are more expensive.

Forcing it to hike up the price of their pork.

Still, it says their customers understand.

"The corn prices being reflected in the products they see at the grocery stores," says Pete Reynolds of McRey Farms.

And with the price of gas sky-rocketing, farmers are cutting back on travel costs.

It's cheaper to sell products closer to home.

They say they're happy to have that local support to fall back on.

"We're going to face them. It's going to get bad. They're coming."

And for these people, they say if they're going to spend the money...

They want to make sure that money stays here.
