Lighting The Torch For Speical Olympics

By WBNG News

Athletes competing in this summer's New York State Special Olympics are already warming up for the games...

Opening ceremonies were held at Chenango Valley High School in Binghamton on Saturday
.
More than 500 athletes from Broome and Tioga Counties were on hand to be introduced with their teams.

As a sign that the games are near, the Olympic torch was lit and carried around the track.

Action News Reporter Gabe Osterhout was there to run with some of the athletes.

This summer, the athletes, ages 8 to 80, will compete in 20 different sports.

"We bowl, we ski. And we do sports that you can do long after you can't run or jump, and play basketball and some of those team sports," says John Crosby the area's Special Olympics Coordinator.

More than 22 hundred athletes and coaches will compete in the games June 12 through the 14th.
