People At Binghamton University Cry Wolf For Conservation

By WBNG News

People at Binghamton University are crying wolf.

BU students and the community had the opportunity to meet the animal often portrayed as a deadly beast in fairy tales.

Iit has people making their childhood fears a thing of the the past.

Meet Atka.

He's a 5-year old, Artic gray wolf.

And the Ambassador of the Wolf Conservation Center.

"It's still cool. I mean he's a wolf, so walking around with a wolf on a leash is very cool."

More than 100 people turned out to support the fight to save future generations of wolves.

Some say, after meeting Atka...they've erased the stigma that wolves are dangerous.

"I know in my childhood, I heard a lot of bad things about wolves, and the "big bad wolf," says Tom Basson of Binghamton University.

"Curiousity. A lot of people want to see a wolf. It's not everyday you see a real life wolf" says Ryan Jennings of Binghamton University.

Turns out, wolves are actually afraid of people.

But, you would never know that by looking at Atka.

He spent the afternoon posing for the camera.

"A very good travelling wolf. He likes being around people, he's comfortable around people."

He's even travelled to Washington, D.C.

To introduce a bill to halt aerial hunting..

In states where the wolf population is low...

They're protected by the Endangered Species Act.

In states where the population is high, wolves are not protected and are hunted.

"It's a double-edged sword where you want wolves to be protected, but once they get that number, that's a great success," adds Maggie Howell of the Wolf Conservation Center

And the Wolf Center says it hopes it finds more success...

As Atka comes face to face with more people.
