By WBNG News

A Binghamton University student who died early Saturday Morning has been identified.

The Tompkins County Sheriffs Office says 22 year-old Willie Poon, of Staten Island New York, died at Cayuga Medical Center, in Ithaca shortly before 3 a.m.

Poon had sustained a serious head injury after a car crash late Friday evening.

The accident happened around 11 o'clock in the Town of Caroline, in Tompkins County.

Poon was a passenger in the car with three other BU students, along with a student from the University of Michigan.

The vehicle was traveling east on Route 79 when the car struck a tree.

The driver was 20 year-old Rolyden Liu of Huntington New York.

Liu was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, as well as Vehicular Assault in the Second Degree.

He was arraigned in the Town of Caroline Court and taken to the Tompkins County Jail.

BU President Lois DeFleur issued this statement.

"This incident is tragic for the families and students involved, and for the entire Binghamton University community.

It is even more so because these students held so much promise for the future, and for all those who knew them, this tragedy will have an impact on their lives forever."

The University says it will have counselors on hand to provide support for students.
