26th Annual Police Memorial Week

26th Annual Police Memorial Week

By WBNG News

Police officers and people from the community gathered for a memorial service at Our Lady of Sorrow's Catholic Church.

Candles were lit in honor of officers from around the Southern Tier that have died in the line of duty.

Since 1845, 31 men and a K-9 have given their lives.

" I think it's important to remember the fallen officers. In Binghamton alone, I remember two of them. One when I was 15 years old was killed in the line of duty. And then officer Barta. He was under our watch at the time when he was killed," says Mike Chalson from the Binghamton Police Department.

After the church service, a silent procession of police vehicles with lights on led people to Four Corners Memorial Park.

Kelly Takashima was there to honor her father, Elmer Beers, who was killed during a domestic violence situation.

"April 28th was the 40th year anniversary of his death. He was shot and killed in Waverly, NY. We come every year, but this year is especially important because of his anniversary," says Takashima of Waverly.

She says this is an emotional day, but she's glad these memorial services are held.

Police from each department that has lost an officer placed roses at the base of a memorial board.

But people are also here to show support for those who serve and protect today.

"You know when you see a police officer on the street, don't always think of us as the bad guys. This of us as doing our job. It may not be to the people's benefit that we're dealing with, but we have to do whatever we feel is right," says Daniel Correll, Binghamton Police Department.

This service concluded with flag raisings, a gun salute, and the Amazing Grace played on bag pipes, in honor of the fallen.
