NY State Senate Votes To Suspend Gas Tax

By WBNG News

Suspending the states Gas tax could be a big boost for New York's tourism industry.

Wednesday the Republican controlled State Senate passed a bill, calling for the suspension of the state's gas tax, between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.

Supporters say it would save you about 32 cents a gallon.

And would benefit the state's second largest industry.

"The amount of money that we are going to incenticise people to come into New York State and spend, by virtue of having lower taxes for once in our life. I mean, could you imagine having less taxes than any other state for a change. I mean, what a remarkable prospect," said State Senator George Winner.

But the bill has little chance due to opposition from Democratic Governor David Paterson, who doesn't believe the state could afford to lose that tax revenue.

The idea to suspend gas taxes for the summer has also been raised in Washington.

But critics say it's likely the oil industry would just raise prices further and erode any savings.
