Reaction to the Gas Tax "Holiday"

Reaction to the Gas Tax "Holiday"

By Jessica Light

It seems every time you look at gas prices, they're just a little higher.

If you shop around you might knock a few cents off your gasoline bill.

But at a time when so many people pinching pennies to buy fuel, would a suspension on the federal or state gas tax help?

"Honestly I don't think its gonna help at all because they're gonna keep raising the gas prices to where no one's gonna be able to afford anything." says Jennifer Gumar of Binghamton.

"I think it's a good idea because that'll maybe spur some additional business in New York state as well as give people a little bit of relief." says Wayne Felsheim of Binghamton.

Senator Hillary Clinton says the federal gas tax holiday would save the average driver about 70 bucks this summer.

The proposed state tax holiday would chop off 32 cents a gallon at the pump.

"I'll take what I can get but you know drop it down 50 cents then when its over it goes up and it's a shock again you know, its a terrible shock we need something consistent." says Jerry Lauko of Binghamton.

"If it helps. I don't think its a solution to the problem but its, you know, a temporary band aid." says David Oakley of Binghamton.

For Liz Newton, every penny saved is a penny earned.

But she says its time to look at the bigger picture.

She says "I hope something happens with the oil companies that are making so much money. Why are they making money and profits and we're suffering."

"You gotta look in the long run. Why should the average person whose scrimping to make a living get gas on gas taxes when the corporations are walking away with billions of dollars?" says Guy Clark of Binghamton.

And with signs like this one nearing $4.00 dollars a gallon, its likely this debate will keep flowing from Washington down to the pump.
