Fire Destroys Abandon Lumber Building

By WBNG News

Fire destroys an abandoned lumber building in Binghamton Thursday night.

It started around 8:45 tonight on Jarvis Street.

And firefighters say it looks suspicious.

Action News reporter Erik Burling has the story.

Perched firefighters douse the abandoned Empire Lumber building.

Nearly a hundred on-looks stand and watch the spectacle.

The Binghamton Fire department says when the first engine arrived both buildings were fully engulfed.

"Feavy, heavy fired in both buildings here when the firefighters arrived. I am comfortable saying it certainly is suspicious, but beyond that I don't have a cause," said Binghamton Fire Chief Dan Eggleston.

"It was enormous just big flames like on big trailor park like the houses go up in flames like a matchbox," said Mike Malinovsky of Binghamton.

"We notified the railroad to re-direct traffic away from the building because the building does abut the railroad tracks," said Binghamton Police Officer Scott Patrick.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire department says the building has been abandoned for a number of years.

And has become a repository for junk and garbage.
