Picking A Parking Spot

Picking A Parking Spot

By WBNG News

Government workers in downtown Binghamton must scope out new parking spots for the next 2 years.

Renovation of the Government Plaza garage begins next month.

And picking a new parking space may come with a little leg work.

Parking spots are boarded off, concrete is deteriorating.

It's just part of the problem here, on the basement level, of the Government Plaza Parking Garage.

It was built in the 1970's.

The city, county and state are pitching in for a nearly 10 million dollar top to bottom rehabilitation.

James Dadimo the direcor of Broome County Security says, "Right now we have about 611 parking spaces we utilize in the complex and during construction we're going to be allotted 237. So we're going to lose almost 400."

Meaning 400 government employees are going to be displaced from their daily parking spot.

They received list of other spaces in downtown Binghamton.

"Actually in June I will be parking over on Washington Street, and I'll be paying 30 dollars a month for that," says Debora Dino of Newark Valley.

Employees already pay a monthly fee to park at the plaza garage.

So their cost won't change much.

But, they will have to add a little more time to get to work.

Nancy Redolphy of Binghamton says "I'm parking on Hawley Street, Saint Mary's Rec Center. And it's going to be a walk, I could use the exercise."

Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan says there are plenty of spaces to chose from.

And whether people park on Washington Street or at this garage at State and Henry Streets, it could help boost business.

"First of all foot traffic is very important for a city. And if there is a lot of people over in the other ramps, people will be walking by other stores and stuff. And hopefully generate some more business."

And generate a little more revenue for the city owned garages.
