Babies Sleep Safest Alone Campaign Kicks Off.

Babies Sleep Safest Alone Campaign Kicks Off.

By WBNG News

A new public service campaign will urge parents to let baby's sleep alone.

Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network announced its new effort to prevent childhood deaths.

It's urging parents and caregivers not to have baby's sleep in the same bed.

Since 2006, New York has recorded 89 deaths of baby's or young children who were co-sleeping with an adult or sibling.

Baby's can be seriously hurt or suffocate if they or the adult rolls over.

"Our goal is to really help parents, grandparents, daycare providers and others be aware of the importance to putting babies to sleep in a safe environment, which is typically a bed of their own," says Sharon Chesna from the Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network.

If a parent or caregiver wants the keep the child close, parents should move the crib near their bed.

As part of the campaign, hospitals will train parents on proper bedding.
