New York's New Voting Machines

New York's New Voting Machines

By WBNG News

New Voting machines are rolling into counties across New York.

Tonight we can show you the new system Broome County will use for elections.

Most people won't get use the machines until next year.

But a select group will use them for this September's Primary Election.

Here it is.

After years of pulling levers to vote, New Yorkers will switch to using this Ballot Marking Device.

It's not a touch screen.

You will use a pen and paper ballot to cast your vote.

Mary Pines from the Broome County board of elections shows how, "They will fill this out with a pen, that will be given to them at a polling site. They will fill it out, according to how they want to vote. And they will insert it into the machine. And that's exactly how they will vote."

The machine will scan the paper ballots and keep them locked inside.

At the end of voting, it will tally the totals and issue a paper receipt.

This September, disabled voters will be the first to use the Ballot Marking Device.

"For a person coming in on a wheelchair the ballot making device will be on a level where they will easily be able to reach it," says John Perticone of the Broome County Board of Elections.

For people who are blind...

They can listen to prompts, and use this touch-pad to vote.

"It won't necessarily make our job easier. But it will make it easier for the disabled," says Mary Pines.

There will be one machine at every polling place.

The Broome County Board of Elections ordered 130, and will check each one as they're delivered.

"We have basically a year to kind of phase in these new machines this year. Using the ballot marking devices for the disabled voters, but 2009 everybody is going to be using them," says John Perticone.

While elections commissioners say its too soon to tell if the machines will make voting simpler, it will modernize how your votes counted.
